You Can Improve Your Sun-Damaged Skin With Laser Treatments

Currently, there are many lasers used for facial and skin rejuvenation and to treat sun damage and photo-aging of the skin. One older laser system, the carbon dioxide laser, has been very effective for treating sun damaged skin but has fallen out of favor. This is because it routinely caused extensive rawness of the skin that typically required over 2 weeks of “hiding out” or “downtime” to recover. In addition to the time it took to heal, it frequently caused skin discoloration and occasionally scarring. Many lasers available today require very little downtime and yield some improvement of the skin but are not nearly as effective as the carbon dioxide laser. As with any procedure, anyone considering laser skin treatments should first consult with a plastic surgeon prior to under going their chosen procedure.

What Is A Chemical Peel?

A chemical peel procedure is a non-surgical procedure designed to eliminate the fine wrinkles in the facial skin that develop as we age. This procedure can be performed by itself or after face lift surgery procedure. Subjects with fair complexions are better suited candidates for this procedure, because a chemical peel procedure can remove pigment from the skin by creating a layer of demarcation between treated and untreated skin in those with darker complexions.
The chemical peel procedure creates a raw surface by removing the top layer of skin. This will heal in approximately ten days. Once the raw skin has healed, makeup can once again be used. The skin affected by a chemical peel procedure is initially red and then fades to pink fairly quickly. This pink color can last for months. After having a chemical peel procedure, the patient must care for the skin by protecting it from exposure to the sun and elements for six months minimum. Sun screen and similar lotions are ideal to use for protecting ones skin following a chemical peel procedure.

A skilled and experienced plastic surgeon can perform a less invasive version of the procedure called a 'Light Peel" in his or her office, while a full chemical peel procedure is performed in a surgical facility on an out patient basis.

Cosmetic Surgeons in San Diego, CA

The differences between a work of art and a nice try can be downright subtle. And in few instances are unassumingly minor details as evident as in portraiture. Is it because we are hard-wired to see the slightest differences in the faces around us and interpret their meaning? The most insignificant change can have significant meaning, and most of the time we're not even truly aware of exactly what it was we perceived there.

There are those who see aesthetic surgery as pure science, and others who consider it art. With the cosmetic subtleties inherent in so many cosmetic procedures, those who see art combined with the science would seem to have an legitimate point. As Doctor Karam, a board certified surgeon in San Diego, CA, says regarding rhinoplasty (nose job), "Perhaps no other operation in plastic surgery has a greater impact in enhancing the way you look than rhinoplasty...Even a subtle change can have a big impact on the attractiveness and balance of the face."

Undoing Sun Damage

Shielding your skin from the summer sun makes good sense, and there are many excellent products that help make it easier than ever. A good sun block with UVA and UVB protection, plus a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses, should be summer essentials.

But let's face it - most of us already have sun-damage. In fact, much of the visible damage you see in your skin today may be the result of sun exposure when you were a child or teenager. So what can be done to improve your skin now - and then keep it looking fresher and healthier?

To erase pigmentation, reduce fine lines and wrinkles, improve tone and texture and stimulate collagen, we recommend the Active FX laser. Active FX is a fractionated CO2 laser that can be done right in our office with minimal down time.

Chemical peels of varying strengths are a common method for resurfacing (deeper peels) or revitalizing (lighter peels) your skin. Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) has a slight bleaching effect and often is recommended for patients with darker complexions. TCA can be applied to your neck, upper chest and other areas of skin damaged by sun exposure.

If you are looking for a milder treatment that provides improvement in fine lines and skin texture, you may choose a series of glycolic or salicylic acid peels. Glycolic acid, derived from natural sources such as fruit and milk, is used in varying concentrations as a medical-strength peeling solution. Even a single glycolic acid peel performed by your plastic surgeon may produce the freshening effect you are looking for. Another option of a superficial peel is a salicylic acid peel. This treatment will help smooth fine lines and even skin discoloration while reducing the appearance of acne and environmental damage to the skin.

Blepharoplasty in Los Angeles

Cosmetic Surgery in Beverly Hills - BlepharoplastyThe eyes begin to exhibit signs of aging in our third decade as tissues sag and fat deposits begin to appear. The outer parts of the upper eyelids sag at a greater rate, which causes the overall shape of the eyes to change from almond to round. Aged eyes give a tired appearance to the entire face. Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, is among the most effective and popular ways to make a face look younger, especially when you consider the cost and the amount of work and compare it to other procedures.

As with any cosmetic surgery, it's best to know all you can before proceeding. A visit to Dr. Francis Palmer's web site can help you research. Then, a consultation with Dr. Palmer about your eyelid lift in Beverly Hills will be a perfect learning experience as you explore the advantages and disadvantages of pursuing a younger-looking you.

Detroit Plastic Surgeon - Breast Reconstruction

There is no form of cancer that is especially pleasant, and the measures that must often be taken to preserve a patient's life are extreme. For women whose lives are darkened by the shadow of breast cancer, it can feel as though more than just skin and tissue have been lost. Her very feeling of identity can be affected profoundly. The reconstruction of a breast can dramatically improve a woman's self-image, self-confidence and quality of life in such circumstances.

Cosmetic surgery is a particularly personal matter. If you elect to seek breast surgery, do so for yourself, and not to fulfill the wishes of someone else. A reconstructed breast will look relatively natural, but it will not be exactly like the breast that was removed. When considering breast reconstruction in Detroit, you want to discuss your goals and questions with a board certified surgeon such as Dr. Bazzi.
